US climate bill hits a roadblock

US president Obama's drive for a climate bill hit a roadblock after a Senate committee responsible for drafting the bill pushed the deadline until September, reports Reuters.

This was announced by Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer. She said plans to draft the bill has been held until next month or so. She, however, assured this doesn't mean an inordinate delay in the passage of the bill.

The Republicans who have been opposed to the bill termed the delay as a weakening of Obama's green agenda.

The House of Representatives on June 26 narrowly passed the bill to cut carbon dioxide emissions from 2005 levels by 17 per cent by 2020 and 83 percent by 2050.
The delay means that Boxer has more time to do enough lobbying in favour of the bill with the powerful constituencies.
