Series of high-level climate meetings unique opportunity to break deadlock Hopes for a breakthrough in climate talks depend on whether political leaders, who are due to meet in a unique series of high-level meetings later this month, will use the opportunity and give political impetus to the negotiation process.
September sees a series of climate change meetings in the US, including the United Nations climate summit, the G20 as well as a meeting of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).
"This is a unique opportunity to show political will and face up global warming," said Kim Carstensen, the leader of WWF Global Climate Initiative. "Japan has given a good example and now all political leaders should show courage and live up to their roles. Without new, powerful political impetus at the meetings in September, the climate negotiations could be doomed."
